"The first original skateboard"
-anyone who tells you they "KNOW" or are the "ONE" who invented the skateboard, is showing their ignorance! Inspired by the 2 wheeled "Flying Cross" I made, rode and traded a number of skateboards in 1958, sothern California. I am sure that I was not the one and only "first" it was a natural invention like mixing peanutbutter with chocolate!
A number of skateboarding firsts can be legitimately claimed-the first commercial boards, first non-ferrous wheels, first ollie, etc.
Surfers DID NOT originate the board, they did make an already existing toy popular, very popular! Lots of kids would grab a skate and make a scooter, It was while making a scooter that I was challanged by a neighbor to ride one without the front handle attached. Having already (painfully) experimented with riding the Flying Cross while standing, I took the challange and had enough sucess that other kids in the ol' hood were trying it too.
There are several different people claiming to be the "inventor" of the skateboard, it is a sure sign of arrogance mixed with ignorance and if you listen long enough they will tell you how they invented the candybar. Original My First Skateboard Page
